Western Food At Sandakan
Alternate morning, you will most likely see me at Pasar Tanah Merah having a bowl of Fish Meat Mee Hon at Pasar Tanah Merah….. It’s my favourite dish!
Why is it so delicious? Freshness is the key! Fish are bought at the nearby (10 meters away) fish market. The Fish is so tasty! Yummy!
Thought the place is a little bit dirty, but the taste keep calling me back to it!

Not forgetting the Sambal Chilli, which compliment the Taste of the Fish and Soup to perfection!
It’s the corner lot at Pasar Tanah Merah!
Lobster is available in Sandakan, however, most of the lobsters here have been pre-book by the exporters as well as the bigger restaurants in town due to higher profitability.
Typically, lobsters in Sandakan is priced around RM 100/kg (USD 25/kg), it’s quite costly to the local.
Lobster can be enjoyed “fresh” (sashimi) or cooked. The meat is sweat, chewy, tougher than ordinary prawn.
In Sandakan, there are only a couple of high class restaurant serving Lobster, namely Ocean King, Pasir Putih Restaurant, Ang Ban Guan and a few others.
My favourite Lobster dish is to cook Lobsters with Rich cheese cream source prepared by Ang Ban Guan (as seen in Photo). However, I found that the restaurant’s cooking standard has degraded significantly due to unknown reason.
Just hope I can enjoy this dish again with better quality!

Only available in Sandakan, the UFO Tart (also known as the cow dung tart) is origin from Sandakan. The tart is made of a base cake with egg white and egg york toppings.
If u look at the photo, you will know why it’s call UFO Tart or it’s not so nice nickname. Anyway, due to the complicated making procedure, less and less bakery is willing to spend time on this article, only a couple of restaurant still serve this tart.
Since it’s unique, give it a try when you are in Sandakan.

What makes a good egg tart?
Egg Tart made up of 2 parts, the skin and it’s egg pudding. A good egg tart should be well balanced between the two.
The Yummy Yummy Restaurant at Bandar Nam Tung, Sandakan blended the two and make it into a perfect egg tart.
With more than 2 generations making the same egg tart, their secret recipe is well keep and their standard is well maintained. It’s quite a dessert to have here in Sandakan.
The egg tart there is best when it’s still popping hot, which is available every 45 minutes between 12:00pm - 5pm daily. Don’t forget to take away a few for your love ones.

One of the famous eating outlet in Sandakan is “Restaurant 2020” located at mile 4, Bandar Kim Fung.
Their famous delicacy is serving “Lu Tun”, fish meat of Giant Garupa. Their special seasoning and cooking method technique of the fish meat is what make them famous.
However, this restaurant is a bit costly consider a standard portion for 1 person will cost you around RM 10/person with has only 2-3 slices of “Lu Tun” meat. However, the rich and famous people enjoy having their lunch there as the restaurant display photos of them enjoying their meal here.
My favorite dish in Restaurant 2020 is their “Sour Vegetable Soup serve with Lu Tun Mee Hoon”. Others might consider their “clay pot fish head or seafood” which is also as nice and famous.
For those who enjoy nice food and doesn’t mind spending a little bit extra, this is the place for you.

Sandakan is a small town located at East Coast of Sabah, Borneo. The town produces a lot of cheap seafood such as lobsters, fishes, prawns, cuttlefish, crabs and shellfish. The average price here is half of what you have to pay for in the major cities in Malaysia.
Due to the abundance of seafood, which is a very good ingredient in food preparation, there are several restaurants here serving simple, fresh and yet delicious seafood delicacy.
Fish-Boat Village Restaurant is one of the well known places for having fresh seafood delicacy. The seafood is “fresh from the sea” every morning.
A bowl of seafood noodle will have 2 fresh sea-water prawns, few pieces of fresh fish meats, cuttlefish as well as shellfish. The well favored seafood soup is also very sweet and nice to have. A lunch set here cost only RM 5 -7 which is really value for money.
Fish-Boat Village also produces quality prawn crackers and salted fish which is the most famous among the locals.
Shall you visit Sandakan, and you enjoy having seafood, Fish-Boat Village is definitely a place not to be missed.
